Pink Ribbon Day - 27th October

Pink Ribbon Day for Breast Cancer Research is on Monday 27 October. Recent Australian cancer survival data demonstrates continuing progress against breast cancer. Breast cancer five-year relative survival has increased from 72 per cent in 1982-1986 to 88 per cent in 1998-2004. However, much more remains to be done.

Don't forget to mark your diary and wear a Pink Ribbon or wristband on 27 October to show your support in raising funds for breast cancer research. A number of retail outlets around Australia will be stocking merchandise or show your support by visiting:

Support Cancer Council with a girls night in

Girls Night In is a national initiative of the Cancer Council held nationally throughout October. You can choose the date that best suits you and your friends.
Not a man in sight. Check. Toilet seat down. Check. Girl anthems on the stereo. Check.

Let the countdown begin. The girls are coming!

Host a Girls Night In this October and besides having a great night in with your girlfriends you will feel great knowing that you are playing an important role in the quest to defeat women's cancer.

As a host, all you have to do is invite your girlfriends around to your place for a night in. Then simply have everyone donate the money they would have spent going out, to the Cancer Council.

Elsie Women's Refuge for women and children - can you help?

Elsie Women's Refuge provides a safe haven for women (and their children) who are escaping domestic violence. It then seeks to secure more permanent accommodation for them. Usually the women and children arrive with little, if anything, more than the clothes they are wearing. They are constantly in need of women's and children's clothes and household items to use in the refuge and to give to the women as they attempt to establish their new lives.

The refuge and the residents need good quality items. If you bemoan the lack of storage space in your home, why not use this as an opportunity to "declutter your life". If you feel like buying some new items, so much the better. If you have contacts through work or elsewhere you can inveigle to donate items, fabulous. If you can secure gift vouchers feel free to send them along.

You may be able to get creative and put together "starter packs", for example:
- kitchen: tea towels, glasses, crockery, cutlery, utensils, saucepans, storage containers (staple food such as tea, coffee, salt, pepper etc)
- bathroom: face washer, towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner, brush, comb, toothbrushes, toothpaste
- bedroom: doona cover, doona, sheets, pillowcases, pillow, alarm clock
- school:pencil case, textas, pencils, rubber, glue, paper, tissues, lunch box, drink bottle.
Kalinda Cobby is taking up the collection of items - you can send them to her work address which is:

Kalinda Cobby, Partner
Hicksons Lawyers
Level 32, 2 Park St, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia

or contact Kalinda on T +61 2 9293 5401 F +61 2 9293 5201 to arrange collection.

Women for Women

Women for Women International mobilizes women to change their lives by bringing a holistic approach to addressing the unique needs of women in conflict and post-conflict environments.

We begin by working with women who may have lost everything in conflict and often have nowhere else to turn. Participation in our one-year program launches women on a journey from victim to survivor to active citizen. We identify services to support graduates of the program as they continue to strive for greater social, economic and political participation in their communities.
